10 athletes from Lacombe are set for competition at the Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games which kick off today in Medicine Hat.

These include members of the bowling team Cobie Matheson, Colin Strugnell, Vicki Day, Ashley Lamey, and Jenette Lawton. Members of the swimming team include locals Warren Campbell, Angela Ahlquist , Skylar Krossa, Jason Pugh and Justin Hoffman.

President Dwayne Campbell explains how his teams have been preparing for the Games.

“We bowl and swim from early October to late April on a weekly basis. So they are participating weekly in those two events. And they do attend local tournaments like with bowling, all athletes are able to go to Red Deer, Olds, Camrose for tournaments.”

In total, 189 athletes from central Alberta will be competing at the games over the next 3 days.

The opening ceremonies start today at 7pm at the Field House of the Exhibition and Stampede Cypress Centre in Medicine Hat.
