Alberta's Tier 2 Team Handball Provincial Championship is happening this weekend here in Lacombe.

The tournament is being hosted by Bentley School, but due to their small gym size and lack of amenities such as hotels and restaurants, it was decided to have the tournament here in Lacombe.

14 teams from all over the province will be competing, with the games being played at the Lacombe Composite High and the Junior High School. The games start Friday morning, and going until the championship game on Saturday at 8:15pm.

Host Chairperson of the tournament Marsha Lush talks about why the sport, which is hugely popular in Europe, is starting to gain some traction here in Canada.

"If you don't know what team handball is, please come out and watch. It's an incredible sport. It’s really big in Europe, in Europe it's like hockey is here. They start at a very young age, they're in club teams, it’s a very fast game, a lot of explosive power...It's just really fast paced and exciting to watch, so if people are free and kind of go, 'I don't know what this is but I want to see it,' please come out, it's a great time."

The tournament started at 9am on this morning and go until 7pm tonight. They pick back up again Saturday morning at 9, with the women's final championship game being played at 5:45pm, and the men’s final game at 8:15pm, both at Lacombe Composite High.
