With the Sun Life Financial Alberta Men’s Amateur Championship about to kick off tomorrow in Ponoka, golfers from all over the province had their chance today to get familiar with the course at Ponoka Community Golf Club.

120 golfers are getting in a practice round this afternoon, including past winner and tournament hopeful Brett Hogan out of Calgary.

He says having won the tournament in 2015 gives him some extra confidence heading into tomorrow.

“It’s not easy doing something the first time, but now that I’ve done it I know kind of what it takes to get to that spot. It will be interesting to try and do it again.”

“I always come into every tournament wanting to win and give myself that opportunity every year and because I’ve done it before, there are some higher expectations. I’m looking forward to a good week.”

(Brendan MacDougall placed in the top 15 in last year’s Alberta Men’s Amateur Championship, looking to place higher this time around.)

Another golfer to keep your eyes on is Calgary native Brenan MacDougall who’s caught the attention of many after winning the Alberta Match Play earlier in the year.

He says he’s keeping his expectations low, but would like to put himself in a position to win heading into the final round.

“I mean obviously, I would like to play well and would like to have a chance to win, so coming down the stretch if I put myself in a position where I can give myself a chance, that’s all I’m looking for.”

To give himself that chance, he says there’s one area he needs pay a little extra focus on.

“The biggest thing around this course for me is putting. I’ve seen a lot of the greens out here and I know some of them are little goofy. It’s going to be putting the ball in the right spot and putt safe when I have to.”

Top three finishers will form the Team Alberta Interprovincial Squad for the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championships in Ontario on August 7th.
