Around 7600 students from kindergarten to grade 12 in the Wolf Creek Public Schools headed back to class today.

That includes Lacombe Upper Elementary School, who caters to students from grades 4 to 6.

Principal Sonja Dykslag says the most challenging thing for her is learning the names of all the new grade 4 students who are coming to her school for the first time this year.

“They are coming over from JS McCormick, so we have about 180 new faces to our building, so they’ll be a lot of naming learning in the next couple of weeks for me.”

One of those new grade 4 students in 9-year-old Molly Whitbread, who is happy to be back.

“Well I like getting back with my friends and meeting my teacher. I like doing math and art, I like to draw.”

Meanwhile, 11-year-old grade 6 student Elliot Wyse talks about his favourite part about coming back to school.

“The teachers, they’re awesome, every single one. And all the clubs they have are pretty awesome. Volleyball club, basketball club, badminton.”

They will hold their welcome back assembly on Friday, where Dykslag says they will introduce students to their theme for this year.

The Lacombe Police Service also wants to remind everyone that school zones are back in effect.

Already this morning LPS had a couple people pulled over, for going too fast in a school zone.
