Community groups celebrating Canada 150 in Red Deer County will soon be able to apply for county grants.

At its June 6 meeting, Red Deer County council voted to create a fund that will support local events, up to $1,000 per request.

The size of the fund is just over $29,000.

That figure is based on $1.50 for each of the 19,542 residents in the county, council heard from administration.

The county had not committed to funding Canada 150 events until this point.

With Canada Day less than a month away, the county is spreading the word about the grants.

“We’re going to definitely be sending out information to our community groups. As well, we will be posting it on social media and groups are more than welcome to contact us as well,” says community services manager Jo-Ann Symington.
