Parents made their way to Lacombe Composite High School Wednesday night to learn tips on how to prevent kids from abusing alcohol and other drugs.

Addiction and Mental Health Counselor with Alberta Health Services Rania Page spoke to about 50 moms and dads on ways to help their kids grow up to be healthy, caring and responsible.

Family support and communication along with setting boundaries is something Page said goes a long way in raising children properly.

Principal of Lacombe Upper Elementary, Sonja Dykslag, said the presentation was extremely helpful to parents.

“It’s all about strategies and helping our kids to be resilient to drugs and alcohol and the temptations around that and to avoid addiction issues that they could come across,” said Dykslag.

She added every parent wants their kids to stay out of trouble and hopes a little direction from a professional will help.

“It’s something that is always on our mind as parents, we want to keep our kids protected and this is one of those topics that we want to make sure they are aware of and to have the tools to avoid falling down the wrong path of abusing drugs and alcohol,” said Dykslag.

Focusing on your kid's strengths and acknowledging them, rather than concentrating on their weaknesses, can also lead to their success.

Creative activities, youth programs and valuable time spent at home with the family are more ways to keep kids out of trouble, said Page.
