The City of Lacombe has purchased and installed a LED energy-efficient lighting system at the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex to reduce the facility operating costs and environmental footprint.

The facility's new system replaces the previous fluorescents and will provide improved lighting, with over 50 percent energy savings expected in the Echo Energy and Echo Internet Arenas.

"The Echo Energy and Echo Internet Arenas are a premier destination in our community," Mayor Grant Creasey said. "Council is pleased to see the City will be able to sustain that reputation, while at the same time providing an enhanced viewing experience and reducing costs ."

The City applied and received the Recreation Energy Conservation Program rebate through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre to help implement this project.

"We're excited to be using this technology," says Manager of Parks and Facilities Calvin Bennefield. "By implementing this new LED lighting system, we'll be reducing the energy we use at the arenas while providing a better experience to our many user groups."

The city anticipates the following savings from this project:

  • Back rink- 63% energy savings, 15% more lumen output
  • Main rink- 50% energy savings, 23% more lumen output

This project aligns with City Council's strategic goal to“leverage technology in the delivery and management of services."
