The Lacombe Legion Branch #79 is preparing for another busy season of selling poppies. The Poppy Campaign started on Friday, October 29 and will run until Remembrance Day.

Branch President, Kathy Hobbs noted that the legion is in need of a bit of extra help to get the campaign up and running.

“Well, the poppy campaign got off to a slow start. As always were short of volunteers… We're still looking for volunteers to do routes. We have some massive routes in Lacombe and we just don't have the volunteers to cover them all,” said Hobbs.

You can purchase a poppy in town at several local businesses in Lacombe including the grocery stores located in the City. The legion serves modern-day veterans including firefighters, police officers and RCMP, paramedics and anyone in the uniform section of service. The money raised from the Poppy Campaign does not go towards the legion but to aid all sorts of veterans of uniform and also the community.

“The money raised from the poppy campaign goes out to the youth, the seniors and the veterans in Lacombe and surrounding areas upon request to the Legion. We have forms. It is public funds, so we must document every step of returning that money back to the people that need it. We do contribute to bursaries for high school students every year, the hospitals, and the senior’s lodges as requests come,” said Hobbs.

You can also stop by the Legion Monday through Friday from 1:00PM to 4:00 PM to make a donation to the campaign or pick up a wreath.
