A program that helps low-income families receive help on transportation costs has received a grant to stretch their money further.

On December 5, the Red Deer Action Society Group received a $2500 grant for the Subsidy Ride Program which is currently in year 10.

They received the grant from the Red Deer and District Community Foundation. The program will use the money to help more families benefit from the dollars that the society works hard to receive.

President of the Red Deer Action Society Jean Stinson says though the money may not seem like a lot to some it goes a long way for others.

“Sometimes they use what they get back for their rent because their funding is that tight in order to keep going.”

Applying for the program is as little as providing proof of income and submitting travel receipts for bus passes/tickets, taxi, or mileage, with successful applications receiving up to $150 back.

“We have parents that have to go buy bus tickets and then come back for reimbursement because they're out of the jurisdiction for busses to pick up their kids and they have to get their kids to school.”

Stinson says they are just trying to do what they can to help those people that are in need, “we help anyone who has little or no income.”

The Red Deer and District community foundation is a local charity that is privately funded.
