Another reminder to ensure you have a working smoke detector in your home following a fire in north Red Deer last night.

Red Deer Emergency Services were called to a suite in a fourplex just off of 67th Street at 6711 59th Avenue about 8:15.

The majority of damage was confined to a mattress in a bedroom, with smoke damage to the unit as well.

There was one person home at the time that was taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation.

With no smoke detector in the unit, Red Deer Emergency Services say the occupant was fortunate that a maintenance man checking on a furnace in the four plex smelled smoke and called for help.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
