A house on a rural property east of Lacombe was destroyed by fire last night (Feb 8th).

It was right around 6pm when Lacombe Fire Crews responded to the home on Highway 12, just west of Prentiss Road.

They were assisted by crews from Bentley, Blackfalds and Clive.

Lacombe Fire Chief Ed van Delden says they arrived to a working fire with flames visible in the story and a half home.

He does have some indication of where the fire started “from the rear corner, right around the chimney area, we suspect the origin of the fire was around the wood stove or the chimney that extended from it”.

van Delden is unsure if they will get a definitive cause of the fire given how severe the damage was.

2 adults were home at the time, they both made it out safely and there were no injuries to any of the fire crews who battled the blaze.

The Fire Chief also admits they were presented with some challenges at the scene “it was a little bit complicated simply because of the long driveway so we had to relay water which really means we had to pump water from the highway down the road to an engine in there, and of course, though it was warmer, I would dare to say most of the guys were pretty cool”.

van Delden will also be following up with 911 dispatch today as they were initially called out to reports of fire both east and west of Lacombe on Highway 12 and they ended up sending crews in both directions.

Damage is estimated in the half a million dollar range.
