The Sheraton Celebrity Dance Off last month raised an impressive $750,000, with all that money going to the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre and the Sexual Assault Support Centre.

The event had celebrities such as Sheldon Kennedy put on their dancing shoes for a good cause, with the dancers alone raising more than $500,000. In the end, the money will go towards both centres, and will be used to eventually build a new building that will hold both groups, as well as planning for future groups who work in similar victim service professions.

Patricia Arango is the Executive Director of the Sexual Assault Support Centre, and she says the plan to bring all these types of services into one building will not only make it easier for victims to seek the help and support they need, but it will consolidate all necessary resources into one place.

"The idea is to have one floor for the Child Advocacy Centre, we will be on another floor, and we will have, probably in the future, more organizations join us in the future... like mental health probably, family services, we don't know. But the idea is to have options for expansion, depends on what we need and what organizations want to come."

Research shows that 1 in 3 Canadians report experiencing some type of child abuse, and victims are 4 times as likely to report self-harm and suicidal thoughts.
