The City of Red Deer made a big announcement this morning, announcing another step in the development of the historic Riverland District.

Mayor Tara Veer as well as other members of City Council was on hand this morning to introduce Red Deer to the newest district, now known as Capstone at Riverlands.

It is one of three districts to be redeveloped in greater downtown Red Deer, and it will be a landmark mixed-use neighbourhood.

What started this project was the City’s desire to continue to improve and revitalize Red Deer into a welcoming and modern destination for people to enjoy.

The visionary new urban community is nestled along the banks of the Red Deer River, and next to the city’s historic downtown core.

With a focus on offering great spaces to live, work, play, and unwind, Capstone will become one of Red Deer’s most innovative and balanced communities.

Veer says plans for this new district have been in the works for almost two decades, and she's excited to finally see it come into better focus.

“The vison of Riverlands, and now Capstone at Riverlands is one that has been 20 years in the making. It first began years ago, when we relocated the railway. And to be able to reach the milestone of today, to be able to launch Red Deer’s next neighbourhood, it just is a strong indication of where we are heading as a community.”

The redevelopment of this area is expected to take many years, and will include a mix of condos and townhomes, commercial development like hotels, office space, shopping and dining, and riverfront areas.

They are also proposing enhanced trail connections to Waskasoo park, as well as a proposed bridge over the river to Bower Ponds.

There is roughly $10 million in public investments for upgrades to roads, sidewalks, and public spaces, as well as an additional $30 million invested through The City’s land development business unit. Private investment will be significantly higher as new developments move in.
