The classic red and white Block Parent sign is seen in fewer and fewer windows in the area.

Many people probably remember the program from their adolescence but may not realize it is still an active community watch initiative.

If you don't, you are one of the people that the Lacombe Community watch association wants to Educate. The Block Parent program, where a sign was placed into the homes of volunteers, meant if you were in an emergency situation the people in the home would do their best to help you.

“The concern is the people that aren’t familiar with the neighbourhoods because everyone in a neighbourhood typically knows a safe house to go to,” explains Brown.

“It’s the kid running through that neighbourhood that maybe doesn’t know where they are at and see the sign and know they can go there.”

Aubrey Brown, with LCWA, says their programs are lacking volunteers, and the knowledge behind the community needs to make it worthwhile.

Brown says the Block Parent program isn’t the only one they offer that needs help, and with crime rates up it's more important than ever to support the community.

“When the parents are driving around and they know what the sign is themselves they explain to their children that it’s a safe place to go to if you ever have any issues of safety or are in an emergency.”
