Blackfalds Town Council is interested in exploring the merits of returning to the two license plate system on all vehicles in the province.

Mayor Richard Poole brought forward a Notice of Motion last week; he says the idea came out of a meeting with local RCMP.

“It was an annual performance review, at that time the group was discussing different ways that we could find tools to help the RCMP or any police force and one of the suggestions came up that in BC there were two license plates”.

The province discontinued front plates in the early 90's as a cost saving measure.

Poole says 2 license plates could assist law enforcement with improved identification of stolen vehicles and vehicles involved in other criminal matters.

His Notice of Motion gained Council's support in a 5-2 vote, Poole explains the next steps.

“Have Administration look at all the benefits, costs and a variety of issues that might be involved in having two license plates because there are pros and cons in it, and they’re going to provide feedback and we’ll decide whether or not Council wishes to make up a resolution that will go to the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association at their annual meeting”.
