It's not uncommon to want to make some lifestyle changes as you set some goals for a new year.

Health and fitness are popular resolutions as we work to strike a balance in a go-go world.

Local personal trainer Candace Sayler says first and foremost, you need to prioritize time to get active.

“I know how much we are on our phones Facebooking, Instagram, texting, whatever the case may be, so let’s even just assume you’re an hour a day on your phone,  take 10 minutes of that and you’re going to exercise slash move for 10 minutes.  We have time for everything that we want to do so it really comes down to, look at that time, once you establish that habit, it becomes easy”.

Another key to success is keeping it simple.

“It’s like everything in life we can either procrastinate and find excuses or we can just do it.  I think the best thing to do is kind of make a list and start thinking of it like, ok if I get up in the morning and I brush my teeth and I comb my hair and I get ready, the same thing is, on that same list is, I’m going to do 10 minutes of movement.  It’s not about getting complicated and learning all the machines at the gym, yes those are great, but little steps, baby steps”.

When it comes to fitness, Sayler says nutrition also needs to go hand and hand as what we eat plays a huge role in the success we will have.

“So a rule of thumb that we tend to say is that how and what you eat or nutrition can be about 70-75%, the exercise that 10 or 15% and genetics the last 5-10%.  So of course there are many other benefits of the exercise, but nutrition plays a big part in the goal of success from a healthy lifestyle”.

Sayler says if you only focus on exercise, you may find yourself more cardiovascular fit, but you won't be able to change your body composition if you are not fuelling your body correctly.
