Student achievement, and capital plan topics of WCPS board meeting

Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS) held a board meeting on March 7.  

Here are the highlights of the meeting:  

Honouring Rimbey Students’ Community Achievement 

The Board of Trustees recognized Rimbey student Reed Toussaint and his Grade 11 peers, Tavish Beagle and Dutch Felt, for their exceptional initiative that began in Grade 6, culminating in the creation of an outdoor skating rink at Rimbey Elementary School. Their project, which involved extensive fundraising and building efforts, successfully garnered grants and substantial community support, showcasing the impactful collaboration between students and the broader community. This honour highlights the students' dedication and the positive influence of their project on the school and local area. 

Maskwacis Cultural College Practicum Students 

WCPS hosted two Indigenous practicum students from Maskwacis Cultural College, incorporating Indigenous perspectives into the educational environment. This initiative supports cultural understanding and inclusion, enriching student learning experiences through the engagement of Indigenous languages and teachings. 

Lieutenant Governor Student Award Nominations 

WCPS nominated eight students for their exceptional contributions to school communities, embodying the award's spirit through determination, positivity, and significant community involvement, showcasing student leadership and civic engagement within the division. 

Alberta Rural Education Symposium 

The symposium served as a platform for WCPS staff to engage with rural education challenges and opportunities, focusing on equity and diversity. Attendance by trustees and division office personnel facilitated learning and sharing of innovative strategies to enhance rural education. 

Post-Budget Meeting with Alberta Education 

A meeting was held with the Minister of Education following the budget announcement to discuss financial impacts on WCPS. This discussion aimed to clarify funding allocations, ensuring the division could strategically plan for educational service delivery. 

WCPS Three Year Capital Plan 

The Board of Trustees approved the 2024/25 to 2027/28 Three Year Capital Plan, prioritizing the construction of replacement schools for Iron Ridge Elementary Campus in Blackfalds and École J.S. McCormick School in Lacombe.
