The City of Red Deer is asking the public for feedback on adding an on-demand transit service to Red Deer Transit’s suite of services as part of The City’s Transit Network Improvement Project.

On-demand transit will offer customers transit options based on trip needs and would offer service in certain areas and during different times of the day to improve connectivity. The system would pick customers up at existing bus stops and drop them off at either the closest stop to their destination, or a stop to connect with a conventional route to continue their journey.

“We are excited about the flexibility and convenience that an on-demand service could offer to our customers,” said Trever Sparrow, Transit Superintendent Conventional Services. “On- demand is a shared ride service that allows customers to book a ride using an online platform. We’ve seen this type of service emerging in other communities including Blackfalds, Lethbridge, Calgary and Edmonton, and believe it could offer Red Deer Transit riders a quick and convenient option.”

The City is considering adding the service to areas it would be most beneficial including Riverside and Edgar industrial areas and Evergreen neighborhood. It may also become a regular service after 7 PM.

“We believe this is could be a great addition to Red Deer’s existing fixed-route, school and action bus services to make it even easier for people to connect,” said Sparrow. “Public input has been essential in the Transit Network Improvements Project thus far, and we are looking forward to hearing from the public about the on-demand service, and how we could make it work seamlessly if we decide to pursue it further.”
