Canada has a new national holiday on September 30th known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The bill has been given royal assent and will be an annual holiday for federal government employees and federally regulated workplaces. The bill was passed within six days following the discovery of the 215 child remains in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Many local schools already recognized September 30th as Every Child Matters: Orange Shirt Day promoting awareness for the residential schools. The day was inspired by residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad who was stripped of her clothing including a brand-new orange shirt during her first day at a residential school. The orange shirt remains a symbol to this day.
