From the Blackfalds RCMP:

The Blackfalds RCMP and emergency services have cleared from a 3 vehicle collision on Highway 11 which resulted in two fatalities.

At 4:30 p.m. Wednesday,  Blackfalds RCMP were dispatched to a serious collision on Highway 11 between Range Roads 283 and 284.

Initial indications are that an SUV traveling eastbound lost control and collided with an SUV traveling westbound.  A car traveling westbound struck the two SUVs.

The two female occupants of the eastbound SUV were declared deceased on the scene. The two occupants of the westbound SUV were transported to the hospital and the driver, and lone occupant of the car was treated on the scene.

The RCMP collision analyst attended to conduct a scene examination and traffic was diverted for approximately 5 hours.  The highway is now open for travel in both directions.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation but icy road conditions are a factor.

Area highways remain in poor driving condition.
