Members of the Wetaskiwin RCMP Detachment and of the RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit (MCU), who have been involved in the investigation of the death of a teenaged male on the night of Thursday August 24, 2017, can now confirm that a 22-year-old man has been charged with second degree murder.

On Friday, August 25, Matthew Alexander Lightning(22), of Wetaskiwin, was arrested and charged with one count of second degree murder in the death of 16-year-old Nakoda Twoyoungmen of Samson Cree Nation. 

An autopsy was conducted earlier today at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton, wherein the manner of Nakoda Twoyoungmen’s death was determined to be homicide.

Matthew Alexander Lightning is scheduled to appear in provincial court in Wetaskiwin on Tuesday, August 29, 2017. 

No other information will be provided by the RCMP at this time as the case is now before the court, however, should additional details become available they will be provided by way of an updated media release.
