NEW UPDATE AS OF 8:11 AM - Power outages continue to affect 400 properties in Red Deer and a state of local emergency is still in effect.

Portions of the following areas may continue without power for up to 48 more hours:

• Vanier Woods
• Area in Riverside Drive
• Area in Glendale
• Area in South Hill
• Parkland School
• Some additional small pockets of the city without power

If you are without power and are in an area other than Vanier Woods, please report the outage to The City by calling 403-342-8111.

“We have seen so many residents reaching out to help each other in tough situations, whether they are helping to clear debris or offering space in their fridge to keep groceries from spoiling,” said Craig
Curtis, Emergency Operations Director, “We encourage everyone to continue helping neighbours, family and friends during this difficult time.”

City recreation facilities continue to offer support to residents during normal business hours. Residents can drop in to the Collicutt Centre, G.H. Dawe Community Centre, Recreation Centre or Michener Aquatic Centre to shower, connect to WIFI or charge cell phones and other devices.  

Trails and parks within the Waskasoo Park system remain closed today, with exception of:

• River Bend Golf and Recreation Area is open; however, the pitch and putt area is closed.
• Discovery Canyon.
• Oxbows Dog Off Leash Park.
• Great Chief Park.

In addition, there may be some scheduled events or activities that need to be cancelled; however, we do not know what that looks like just yet. We will continue to update groups that have scheduled activities where they are impacted.

Widespread power outages continue in Red Deer, with the local state of emergency still in effect. 

Power is still out in approximately 15 per cent of Red Deer, with the outages expected to continue for up to the next 72 hours in some areas of the city. Currently, some parts of the following areas are without power:  

  • West half of Riverside Meadows
  • Village Mall and Highland Green
  • Grandview and Eastview
  • Vanier Woods
  • Riverside Drive area, including Lion’s Campground
  • Westlake and Fort Normandeau
  • Some additional small pockets of the city without power


There may be intermittent power outages in other areas for short periods of time, under an hour. Please report any outage that lasts longer than two hours by calling 403-342-8111. 

“We ask residents to reach out to their neighbours who could be without power for the next 72 hours” said Paul Goranson, Emergency Manager Director / Operations Director. “This includes anything from helping cleaning up fallen debris, charging phones or offering space in your freezer.”

If you are without power, residents are welcome to access our four recreation facilities (Collicutt Centre, G.H. Dawe Community Centre, Recreation Centre and Michener Aquatic Centre). There is WIFI, and outlets to charge cell phones.

Some intersections are still without power or have flashing traffic lights. Please approach all intersections with caution. 

As some areas of Ross Street are closed, when entering the downtown westbound on Ross Street, detour at 40 Avenue north to 55 Street or south to 39 Street. For exiting the downtown core, choose routes other than Ross Street at this time.  We expect Ross Street to open later tonight.
