Two people were taken to hospital, one by ambulance just before noon today (September 25th, 2017) after a suspected C0 leak occurred at a house along C and E Trail.

Deputy Fire Chief Drayton Bussier explains what happened.

“EMS responded for a 911 call for a sick person in the home, and when they got there, symptoms were appropriate for C0 poisoning, so they let dispatch know to send us out there.”

One person in the house was transported to hospital via ambulance for treatment, while another was able to go to the hospital by their own free will.

The cause of the leak has not yet been determined.

Atco was called in to shut off the gas to the house, prior to the fire department clearing the scene around 1:20pm.

Bussier wants to remind residents that with the cold weather coming, it's important to check or service your furnace prior to turning it on for the first time since earlier the spring, as a clogged filter or improperly functioning furnace can cause a leak of the potentially fatal gas.

He says regular furnace maintenance a couple times of year, as well as having a working carbon monoxide detector are key in preventing C0 related illness or death.
