Swords were flying at the medieval battle that took place at Kin Kanyon Park in Red Deer this weekend.

Using their high impact foam weapons and suited in real armor, the Red Stags of Red Deer hosted a pot luck and tournament Saturday afternoon.

Dressing up in different medieval outfits such as knights and swordsmen, members of the historical group compete for better weapons and higher ranking through battle.

Jonathan Kruger, who’s from Red Deer, but is living in Calgary, made the trip to join in and explains how it works.

“Depending how long you are in the group or the number of activities you participate in, you gain ranks and with it you can use more equipment.”

“I can only use a short sword, but then you can upgrade to a short sword and shield and armour until you’re up to a compete medieval knight.”

A member for about a year now, Kruger said it’s been great escaping to the world of fantasy.

“We try to emulate chivalric societies back in the medieval ages. We have the Celts, the Normans and the Vikings.”

The group gets together every Wednesday night at Clearview Community Center for sparing and other activities from 7-9.
