It's back to school season, and a program that gives supplies to low-income families is in need of donations.

Tools for School is a joint project between the Outreach Centre and the United Way of Central Alberta.

“It’s been tough. We’re just kind of just dealing with things a day at a time. We have no idea how many people are coming in on any given day,” said Darcy Ouellet, a fund development officer for Women’s Outreach.

“I’m actually out of high school backpacks right now. I hope that we’ll see some donations but donations have been pretty light this year, unfortunately.”

The program provides the majority of school supplies needed depending on the student’s age.

Donations can be dropped off in Red Deer at both Staples locations, the north end Wal-Mart, the Parkland Mall food court, at the United Way, or at the Outreach Centre.

Women’s Outreach also takes cash donations through its website.

“So many families are living paycheque to paycheque. If a family has three kids, where does the money come from,” Ouellet said. “If we can make it easier on the families, kids are starting school just like every other kid.”
