Red Deer unveiled their newest sculpture Wednesday, the eleventh of their bronze series known as The Ghost Collection, seen in various parts of the city.

Featuring two young hockey players taking a face off from an enthusiastic referee, ‘The Face-Off’, created by Victoria born artist Nathan Scott, is located out front of the Servos Arena and was designed to help commemorate the city's hockey history.

Scott, who took about 6 months to complete the statue, says he was motivated to capture the feel of an iconic hockey moment once his design was selected out of 12 others.

“You know you don’t find out about who was cut and I’m sure the other ones were just as great, and I really don’t know why they chose me I’m so honored, but just this whole thing with Red Deer, your guy’s collection of art is incredible, so to be a part of this, I’m very honored, very blessed.”

City Manager Craig Curtis thinks it's the perfect fit.

“Red Deer is very much a hockey town, and in opening this new arena, we really wanted to have something that reflected the game, that reflected this building, that complimented this building.”

This is the first statue in the Ghost series that features fictional people, and not historical figures in the city's history.

The cost of the statue, one percent of all capital project construction costs allocated by the Public Art Policy, is approximately $150,000.
