Talented Lacombians have been offered a huge opportunity to create a music video with the help of a grant from Storyhive.

The project is funded by Telus and provides grants to aspiring producers and content creators from Alberta and British Columbia.

Director Cassandra Paige Johnston alongside the local band Haaze was chosen to receive a $10,000 grant to create the music video for “Al”. A song they made about Al, a tobot who tells the story of Humans vs. Technology.

Johnston says she was excited to have this opportunity again and to work alongside fellow local talent.

“It’s an accessible grant for independent filmmakers out there; it’s a really good one. This is my third time receiving the grant, I did two short films before this with Storyhive and it’s really exciting because Haaze band is also from Lacombe.”

The group was very fortunate to receive the money, which they had to compete with 220 others to get. Out of all the entries, 40 were chosen to create their vision. Now they have some work to do before it hits the big screens.

“Film, edit, do all that and then Storyhive has their own release for it, so it’s on their platform.”

Johnston says this isn’t the first project the two groups have worked on before. Alex Adamson who is the musical lead for Haaze along with Johnston co-wrote and acted in the short film “Ugly Girl,” a story about a girl born with features that aren’t typically pretty, to prove that it’s not how you look but how you feel that counts.

“I have never done a music video edition so I’m really excited to see how it differs from a short film one.”

The video for “Al,” will be featured in summer 2019 on Telus channels and Storyhive.com
