In support of nine-year Alex Kroetsch, who has been battling osteogenic sarcoma cancer since October, a tattoo shop in Sylvan Lake is holding a fundraiser today and tomorrow.

Thoughtbox Tattoo and Gallery is offering cancer ribbon tattoos for just $50, with all proceeds going to children’s cancer research.

After Alex lost part of her leg in February, her mom Megan Mottus said it’s been hard on her daughter and saw this as an opportunity to pick up her spirits.

“I thought it was something that would be really great for us to do as she was nearing the end of treatments, something to really close it all off and to look forward to.”

“She’s been sad at times asking herself ‘Why me?” and says she doesn’t want to do this anymore.”

When Mottus reached out to the owner of Thoughtbox Tattoo and Gallery, Ryan Sole didn’t have to think twice about helping.

“My dad had three kinds of cancer and ended up dying from lung cancer, so it means a lot,” said Sole.

“Especially a little kid, I have four kids myself. I couldn’t imagine her having to deal with it and she’s more chipper than most people here today.”

Mottus has nothing but good things to say about Sole and everybody who made this fundraiser possible.

"They’re amazing. They’re really amazing to donate all their time. Ryan and Andy (Rogers), the tattoo artist that works here, ended up finding other tattoo artists to come in and help out for the day.”

“They’ve been great.”

A silent auction is also taking place throughout the weekend along with a BBQ.

The fundraiser goes until 7 p.m. tonight and tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Mottus and Alex are also taking part in this year’s One Walk to Conquer Cancer 25 km walk event in Calgary on June 25.

To donate to Alex and her team visit http://www.onewalk.ca/ and search ‘1 Team 2 Team Yellow Fish Gold Fish’.

Proceeds from the walk will help support the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
