The Wetaskiwin RCMP are investigating a stabbing that resulted in the suspects fleeing from police and driving into the side of a brick building.

On July 13th, 2017 at approximately 12:30 a.m., the Wetaskiwin RCMP were called to a stabbing that occurred in a common area of an apartment building on the south side of town. A 32-year-old Wetaskiwin man sustained two stab wounds to his back.

Police responded immediately and upon arrival were updated that the two suspects from the stabbing were now in a vehicle.

The suspects fled from police striking a parked police vehicle and a parked civilian vehicle. Two police officers narrowly escaped being hit by the fleeing vehicle. The attempt to escape soon ended when the suspects drove their vehicle into the side of a business located near the intersection at 55 Street and 39 Avenue in Wetaskiwin.

The driver and passenger of the suspect vehicle were arrested and transported to hospital for injuries sustained during the collision. The 21-year-old, male driver, from Maskwacis, has since been released from the hospital and is currently in police custody. The 23-year-old, male passenger, from Maskwacis, is in hospital in Edmonton where he remains in stable condition.

The victim of the stabbing was transported to a hospital in Edmonton where he remains in stable condition. The investigation has determined that the victim and accused are not known to each other.

This matter is still under investigation by the Wetaskiwin General Investigations Section, and no charges have formally been laid. An update will be provided when available and charges are laid.

“This incident could have resulted in additional injuries to the public and our officers” says Inspector Keith Durance, Detachment Commander, Wetaskiwin RCMP, “Thankfully no one else was injured”.
