The meeting was hosted by Safe Communities Central Alberta in an effort to make the public more aware of the services offered by the Red Deer RCMP.

“I just want to share the different things that are happening in the community, how we are set up to deal with crime, and some of the things that are coming in the future like bike registry and camera registry,” explained Grobmeier.

In the near future, Red Deerians will be able to register their bicycles to protect against theft. With a standardized registration number, the RCMP will be better able to locate the owners of stolen bicycles. Registration will be easily done through an app or through the RCMP.

In addition to bike registration, the Red Deer RCMP will be adding a home security camera registration service as well. Registering a home security camera will aid the RCMP in a number of local crime investigations. Right now, there are a number of security cameras that the RCMP cannot have access to and by registering cameras the RCMP will have a broader scope of surveillance in the city at easier access.

The meeting was not just about future services to come to the Red Deer RCMP, but Grobmeier also went over the successes and even failures of the current services offered.

According to the officer, their PINPOINT program has been one of their most successful programs in crime reduction in recent history.

“It’s taken us from a police force that was very reactive to one that is more proactive, more data intelligence-led and working more collaborative with groups. It's focused us on taking the resources that we have which aren’t unlimited and being far more strategic with them. It tells us kind of where we need to be, when we need to be there, who we need to be focusing on and that relentless work is what led to the dramatic reductions in 2018.”

However, the program that the Red Deer RCMP have struggled with the most is their ‘lock it or lose it’ campaign that urges the public to lock their cars to avoid theft.

“For instance, people leaving their cars running in the cold with the keys in them. They’re asking for their vehicles to be stolen and more often than not they are being stolen.”

The officer says that the RCMP will be looking at other ways to get the message out in the future so that they can prevent further theft.

Overall, the Red Deer RCMP have seen a lot of successes since 2016 and with their new programs, they’re bound to see more successes in the future with new and innovative programs.
