About 250 Grade 5 students across Lacombe County gathered at the County’s Operations Building this afternoon to learn about farm safety.

Lacombe County Farm Safety Day offered students the chance to learn ways on how to stay safe in and around farms. Students rotated through seven safety presentations which included demonstrations on horse, fire and grain safety.

Assistant Ag Fieldman, Jalene Makus, believes there are too many incidents where children are exposed to dangerous situations and said creating awareness is important.

“There have been some cases a couple of years ago where there were a few kids that died in a grain accident after they sunk in the grain. That’s one of our displays today, and it promotes education and awareness to kids that it is dangerous and that you have to be really careful.”

Grade 5 teacher at Terrace Ridge, Billie Lafleche, said there’s such an importance behind educating kids on farm safety especially at a young age.

“It’s just been a wonderful opportunity to see all the different parts and everything from the animals to the machinery, to fire safety. It’s really important for all kids and I love how they target this group of kids because this is the age group where they start venturing out and working on farms.”

The other demonstrations were electrical, heavy equipment, mowing and ATV safety. It’s the second straight year Lacombe County has held Farm Safety Day.
