Students from Maryview School in Red Deer joined thousands from all reaches of the world to participate in the world's largest sport stacking event.

If successful, the students will help break yet another world record by stacking up and down various pyramids of cups in lightning speed for at least 30 minutes.

Physical education teacher, Leo Chauvet said this is the fourth time the school has participated and explains the benefits for the students.

“It’s something that is unique, fun, it’s fairly inexpensive to get into and the kid’s really enjoy it. It’s great for hand eye coordination, brain activity, and fitness and they get to try a lot of different things they don’t normally do in a gym class.”

Last year 618,394 stackers participated to break the previous year’s record of 592,292. This year sights are set on 625,000 stackers participating.

Chauvet adds they are the only school in Red Deer participating and it will take about a week before they know if they've broken the world record.
