St. Joseph High School in Red Deer hosted their first annual Cultural Street Fair event on Wednesday, which gives the chance to celebrate their diversity through displays and different events.

Learning traditional dances, playing cultural games, and enjoy tasting dishes from around the world gave students a chance to express their own unique cultures and identifies regardless of where they are from, says Vice Principal of St. Josephs Teresa Borchers.

“Ultimately this gives students the opportunity to share a little bit about themselves. Who they are, all that they bring to our school community, whether you are born here in Canada or coming from outside of the country, we all have cultures, languages, heritage that are important to us, that we value sharing with others.”

Grade 10 student Marian and her friends were representing El Salvador, and she says this fair is a great way to celebrate the multicultural aspect of their school and community.

“I think this is a good opportunity for kids of many cultures to show what part of their countries… I love my country very much so I think it was a really good idea to have the street fair to show your culture so you can show other people what you do in your country.”

Staff at the school wanted to give the students a chance to express their own personal cultural identity and customs and share it with others, as they learn about Canadian culture through their studies every day.

About 125 students showcased their work yesterday. The event was open to the public free of charge, and they even invited some elementary school students from some of their feeder schools to join in on the fun.
