On February 17th, you can check out NHL action in Calgary while supporting families right here in central Alberta.

During the Calgary Flames versus Anaheim Ducks game at 2 p.m. in Calgary, five dollars from each ticket sold will be donated to Smiles Thru Lindsey Foundation and the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre.

Rick More, CEO of the Red Deer and District Chamber of Commerce, lost his daughter Lindsey to suicide in 2015. Since that loss, his family started the Smiles Thru Lindsey Foundation to help bring greater awareness to mental health struggles in young people. The Foundation provides funding for educational programming, awareness, and outreach to address mental health in kids and teens.

"We can’t believe that [the foundation] is just as strong today as it was when we started this four and a half years ago. A lot of that is my daughter Stephanie, who keeps things very active on social media, and keep things fresh," More said.

"Whenever I talk, I keep it personal about Lindsey because she was a great human being. To me, it’s not statistics. People forget about statistics. But when you see a human who seemed to have everything going for them, and this still happened to them, I think that’s what people relate to."

He said that his family has been through a lot since their daughter's death, but that they took it as a chance to learn more and understand the issues that young people face.

"For myself, personally, the growth has been trying to understand the illness. You want to know what took your daughter’s life," he said, adding that's why education programs and advocacy are so important for the future.

More said the Calgary Flames - who are members of the Red Deer and District Chamber of Commerce - wanted to support the community in some way, and they figured the Family Day game would be the perfect opportunity.

"We all have to start enjoying life. The family structure is important. With this being on Family Day and supporting two great causes related to mental health, it all works together," he said.

Meanwhile, the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre continues to work towards their ultimate goal of a new facility that will house various social agents, officers and resources for children and families who have been victims of abuse or who are dealing with trauma.

Tickets can be purchased online at flamesgroups.com/RedDeer.

More commented, “We’re so pleased to work with the Calgary Flames in support of mental health and the incredible work done by the Child Advocacy Centre and the Smiles Thru Lindsey Foundation. The Calgary Flames have been great supporters of our community and we’re looking to get as many Central Albertan’s up to the Family Day game as possible. It’s a win-win to see the Flames battle the Ducks and support these great causes at the same time.”
