One of the biggest fundraisers for the Ronald McDonald House Central Alberta is the Freeze the House Curling Bonspiel, which takes place from January 26th to the 28th at the Pidherney curling centre.  This year, they are kicking it up a notch by adding a family gala.

The Space for Families Gala will be held in the Harvest Centre at Westerner Park on the 27th of this month. . The gala will have a sci-fi theme, complete with dancers, celebrity guests, and a dueling guitar group.

Events Coordinator with the Ronald McDonalds House Central Alberta Cassandra Galenzoski say there will be a few special guests, including Canadian curling legend Kevin Martin.

“His son (Karrick Martin) is also going to be there, who is up-and-coming and following in his father’s footsteps. We also have Paralympic swimmer Tammy Cunnington, she is a local swimmer and she was just in Rio in 2016 representing Canada.”

Galenzoski says the money raised will help ease the financial burden for families who have to stay at the house.

“There is nothing that they money is specifically allocated for, it really just helps us run the house through our day to day operations, which is everything from making sure the house runs to providing resources for the families, making sure that we can provide programming, all of that. So it will really help all aspects of the house.”

Money raised will go directly to the helping pay for families to stay at the house. It's costs $170 dollars a night to stay at the Ronald McDonald house, but thanks to communities donations like this, families only pay $12 a night.
