Local BMX rider Jake Plohman had some comments about proper etiquette at the Lacombe Skatepark, and decided to take those issues to a local community Facebook group.

His concerns focused on the safety of some of the smaller children who come to the park with their parents, and either don't listen or don't know about some of the unwritten rules of riding.

This unwritten code is all about rider safety, rather than letting the bigger and older kids have their way with the park.

There are times when Plohman had to bail off a ramp and sacrifice himself in order to avoid hitting a child who happened to be in the middle of his landing area, and he says this happens often.

"As another guy mentioned (on the Facebook post) his kid comes home and tells him about stories of people taking these huge falls out of ramps, just to avoid hitting kids".

Plohman says he's not saying there should be an age limit to the park, as some people on the group suggested, as kids are starting to ride earlier and earlier. He just thinks riders and parents need to be aware of some of the etiquette that goes along with a skateboard park.

Things like being aware of your surroundings at all times, taking turns on certain ramps, and maintaining control of your equipment are essential to keeping all the riders safe.

"I've gotten a lot of recommendations about maybe even organizing something with the city at Lacombe Days, to maybe have kids come and get a couple people together to just sit them down and talk to them about what rules should be put in place in the skate park, and just educate kids on how to be safe there".

His Facebook post had more than 50 comments at the time of publishing, with most people supporting his idea, and discussing ways that people of any age can safely enjoy themselves at the skate park.
