A trio of sisters has been making hair scrunchies as a way to raise funds to support the Smiles Thru Lindsey Foundation.

Hayden, 18 and Gracie Mydland, 13 are the primary pairs of hands behind Sew Much Matters, with their younger sister Brooklyn helping out where she can.

Gracie started the project as a way to stay busy through the summer, but also to honour the memory of Brooke Stout of Innisfail.

"We're making hair scrunchies in honour of Brooke Stout, who lost her battle with mental illness in February this year. I wanted to raise awareness for mental health and decided the money would go to the Smiles Thru Lindsey Foundation," Gracie said.

Stout attended the same school as Gracie, and was a classmate of Gracie's brother.

"It make me feel really good because I know that even though I can't really do anything, I can raise money for other people to make a difference," Gracie said.

Gracie's mom, Brandy, said her daughter has been sewing since she was 10 and was looking for a sewing project to keep busy over the next few weeks.

Brandy said they talked about a few different organizations that they could support with the project, and when Smiles Thru Lindsey came up, it became the obvious choice.

"My 18-year-old, Hayden, needed to do a school project that had an impact in the community, so she jumped on board with her sister. Our youngest one, who is 10, strings the elastics through and it's brought us all together," she said.

Brandy added that the response from people who have purchased scrunchies has been incredible and at times, emotional.

"I had one of Brooke's friends, who I'd never met but went to school with my son in Red Deer, contact me and said how much she missed [Brooke], and said how excited she was we were doing this... she talked about Brooke with me and said, 'Every time I see this, I'll be able to think of her and have something to remember her by'. It was just really amazing that I got to talk to someone that I don't even know and we made an impact with her."

Scrunchies are available for order, five for $20. They can be purchased through a Google order form document.
