February 2nd - A Red Deer man faces numerous firearms charges after a man suffered a non-serious gunshot wound during an altercation at an apartment building in the Highland Green neighbourhood on January 31.

31 year old Derek John Bergdal faces the following charges:

· Criminal Code 244(a) – Discharge firearm with intent to wound
· Criminal Code 344(1)(a) – Robbery using restricted or prohibited firearm
· Criminal Code 87(1) – Pointing a firearm
· Criminal Code 95 – Possess restricted or prohibited firearm with ammunition
· Criminal Code 117.01(1) – Possess firearm contrary to prohibition order
· Criminal Code 180(1)(b) – Commit nuisance causing physical injury

Bergdal was remanded in custody and will appear in court in Red Deer on February 2 at 9:30 am.

At this time, no further charges are pending, but RCMP continue to investigate and will issue an update if more information becomes available.


January 31st - Red Deer RCMP have taken several people into custody after a disturbance at an apartment building in the Highland Green neighbourhood involving a firearm.

RCMP responded to the report of a disturbance shortly after 8:30 am on January 31 at an apartment in the area of 59 Avenue and 63 Street.

RCMP have determined that a firearm was discharged during an altercation between two men who were known to each other.

One man suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Several people have been taken into custody.

There is no danger to the public and RCMP continue to investigate.

An update will be issued when more information is available.
