Lacombe’s curling rink needs a surprise roof replacement but it won’t be covered by the city’s insurance.

The roof was first hit by a hailstorm in 2015 but damage was not apparent until last October. By then, the city’s two-year window to file an insurance claim had closed.

“It was impacting the ongoing activities of the facility. We had concern about the building envelope being impacted if we let it continue,” said chief administrative officer Matthew Goudy.

“We did try to take some interim measures to limit the damage and to try and get the roof by. Unfortunately the level of damage that’s showing up now, as the thaw’s happening, the silicone patches haven’t helped.”

City staff will now seek prices from contractors for the project. One quote has the cost at $350,000.

As well, Goudy said the city will ask the county to share the repair costs.
