You may soon see more backyard chickens in the City of Red Deer.

City Council was reviewing the 2014 Chicken Bylaw yesterday which permitted 65 chicken licenses and a cap of 1 license per 1500 people.

The demand for the licenses continues to increase annually with 35 applications currently on the waiting list; a year ago there was a waitlist of 12.

City staff says since introducing the bylaw, complaints have been minimal with less than 5 complaints received, and all of those cases were successfully resolved.

The recommendation is to increase the cap on licenses to 1 per 1000 people, which would mean 100 licenses would be available.

The bylaw amendment will come back to Council, giving the public some time to provide feedback.
