The Mayor’s Recognition Awards ceremony was held Thursday night at the Sheraton Hotel in Red Deer, thanking people for the great work they do in the community.

On the list of award winners was the 2016 MasterCard Memorial Cup Organizing Committee, who took home the Mayor’s Special Award.

The award recognizes outstanding leadership, volunteerism and contribution to the community.

Co-Chair Merrick Sutter said the 2016 Memorial Cup couldn’t have been successful without the support of the entire community.

“Can’t say enough about the community and Central Alberta in stepping up. Sponsors, ticket buyers, volunteers, it was great in all areas.”

The event generated $13 million in economic spin off, something Mayor Tara Veer said was crucial to Red Deer, especially during an economic downturn.

She said it has also opened the door for future attractions.

“Red Deer garnered profile provincially, nationally and even internationally and it ultimately positions us for future sports tourism potential and future tourism potential on other fronts as well.”

“Red Deer demonstrated excellence that we can host major caliber events.”

Mayor’s Recognition Awards began in 1990 and have seen over 1,000 citizens cross the stage.

Athletes, volunteers, artists were also on the list of award recipients. A full list of winners can be found at http://www.reddeer.ca/media/reddeerca/whats-happening/news-room/2017/June-8-2017---QA-Backgrounder---Mayors-Recognition-Awards.pdf.
