Red Deer College's Students' Association president William Baliko hopes he never has to use a naloxone kit on campus.

But as part of the group's response to the opioid crisis, he's planning on learning how to administer the life-saving overdose medication, just in case.

"We're tackling the fentanyl crisis and working with community members, and AHS for getting naloxone kits on campus and training individuals, just to be prepared for that," Baliko said.

Baliko said other members of the Students' Association team will be seeking training as well.

The SA president was speaking to reporters during a media availability for the first week of school.

"The Students' Association and Student Council are actually around students during parties and get-togethers and so we want to be as prepared," he said. "Hopefully, we don't need to."

Baliko said the SA's action on opioids will be more visible in the coming months.
