Red Deer College celebrated the opening of its renovated and expanded Makerspace yesterday.

The facility is now located inside the school library and includes tools like 3-D printers, a button maker machine and electronic circuits to a green screen and audio-visual equipment.

Kristine Plastow is the director of the Library Information Common. She said students can use the equipment for projects outside class, for free.

“We have things like design competitions where students from various programs get together and then they can work in here on their project. It can be anything from prototyping to business plans to creating a video to promote a product. Any of those things,” Plastow said.

The school's original Makerspace was first created in 2015. The cost of renovation and expansion was paid for through a federal grant, matched by the college.
