Wanting to advocate for seniors, health care, education, agriculture, and property rights, Red Deer lawyer Gayle Langford has decided to seek the nomination for the UCP party in the Innisfail-Sylvan Lake riding.

Langford says being a lawyer gives her a huge advantage over other candidates when it comes to dealing with complex legal issues, which can been a steep learning curve for a new candidate who may not have prior legal experience.

She says her experience dealing with different levels of government in the legal department, as well as her time as President of the Red Deer Chamber of Commerce, makes her the perfect candidate, who would hit the ground running.

“I know how government departments work, I’ve done fed-province across ministerial work so I have a really good sense of bureaucracies within government. I also have a really good cross section on the legislation because I’ve done surface rights, I know the health legislation, I’ve done lots of municipal government stuff, Alberta Utilities Commission, Albert Environment. So I have a broad background to draw form.”

Langford was born and raised in rural north eastern Alberta, she knows all too well about the problems of rural crime, especially when the nearest police officer is more than a half hour away.

“My husband and I live out in the country and we’re 45 minutes from the nearest detachment, and on a sunny Saturday morning we had someone come in and try to steal something from us, and our neighbour was stabbed. So rural crime to me is something we really need to get on and deal with.”

She wants to advocate for homeowner and property rights, as well as strengthening the criminal codes, and has a strong desire to help cut down on the backlog in the court system, which tends to add to the crime problem by not prosecuting offenders quickly enough, and in some cases, having their charges thrown out.

Langford is one of 6 seeking the UCP nomination for Innisfail-Sylvan Lake, the Red Deer County resident is up against current county councillor Christine Moore, Red Deer - Mountain View MP Earl Dreeshen's son, Devin Dreeshen, former Sylvan Lake town councillor Joan Barnes, current Penhold town councillor Mike Walsh and long time Sylvan Lake minor football coach Victor Sloboda.
