From Rocky Mountain House RCMP

On March 10, 2018 around 12:15 p.m., the Rocky Mountain House RCMP received an emergency SOS signal from a GPS device at a location approximately 140km west of Rocky Mountain House, in the back country of Clearwater County.  It was determined the SOS signal was coming from an individual who was ice climbing.

The Rocky Mountain House RCMP had an officer in the immediate area who responded to the scene. The Rocky Mountain House Search and Rescue - Mountain Rescue Team, was also deployed to the location along with Ahlstrom Helicopters for air support.

The injured male individual along with his three ice climbing partners managed to walk off the mountain to the roadway.  It was learned that an avalanche had occurred while the four climbers were climbing an ice wall.  The injured climber was treated on scene by EMS from Nordegg. He was then transferred to STARS and airlifted to Edmonton for his non-life threatening injuries.

The RCMP would like to remind the public about the natural hazards in the back country at this time of year.
