With more than 5,000 Albertans not having a permanent place to call home, and of those nearly half turn to emergency shelters for a place to spend the night, the province is making sure they have a safe place to stay.

17 homeless shelters across the province are sharing in $1.2 million dollars to ensure those shelters remain safe and accessible.

Executive Director of the Safe Harbour Society in Red Deer, Kath Hoffman says they knew some funding was coming down the pipe and had an opportunity to identify where it would be best spent.

“What we did with that money was to enhance our security camera system at Peoples Place Shelter and then also install cameras inside and out of our warming centre facility that didn’t have cameras before. So that really helps us just enhance the safety for people in our programs and for the surrounding community”.

Safe Harbour received a total of $36,151 for the security enhancements.
