From Lacombe RCMP:

On October 2 the Ponoka Integrated Traffic Unit responded to a serious four vehicle collision which resulted in the death of a 47-year-old male.

At 3:52 p.m., the RCMP were dispatched to a collision on the QEII, approximately 5 km. north of the Lacombe Highway 12 exit.  Fire and emergency services were on scene.  Four vehicles were involved in the collision.

An RCMP collision analyst attended the collision scene and an investigation will be completed by the analyst. Preliminary information indicates that a northbound gravel truck struck the rear of a truck and trailer unit which then struck a mini van.  The mini van entered the centre median while the gravel truck and pick up truck entered the ditch.  A fourth vehicle was also struck but was determined to be driveable.

The male drivers of the gravel truck and the mini van were transported via ground ambulance with non life-threatening injuries.  The male driver of the pick up truck was determined to be deceased at the collision scene.

RCMP and Sheriffs remained at the collision scene for approximately five hours.  Northbound traffic was able to move in the west lane.

The cause of this collision, including all contributing factors, remains under investigation.  No further information will be provided by the RCMP.
