Ponoka County RCMP:

On October 9, the RCMP QEII Integrated Traffic Services Unit responded with Ponoka RCMP to a 9-1-1 report of a serious two vehicle collision north of Ponoka.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a Dodge Grand Caravan was travelling northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway when a head-on collision occurred with a car.

At 10:08 p.m., the first 9-1-1 call was received that a vehicle was travelling in the wrong direction.

Several RCMP units responded but prior to locating the vehicle, another call was received that a collision occurred.

Fire and emergency services responded. STARS Air Ambulance was unable to respond due to weather.

The 77-year-old driver, and lone occupant, of the van was taken to an Edmonton hospital.

The three occupants of the southbound car were all extricated from the car and also taken to an Edmonton hospital.

The occupants included a 28-year-old female driver, 53-year-old female passenger and 1-year-old male passenger.

All above individuals suffered serious injuries and remain in the hospital in stable condition.

The RCMP collision analyst attended the scene to conduct an investigation.

One lane of traffic remained open during the investigation.

The investigation remains ongoing and the RCMP are seeking public information.
