A program for those with Dementia is able to grow thanks to Lacombe’s recreation and culture grant.

"Opening Minds Through Art," was one of 5 chosen recipients, and received just under $5000 to buy art supplies and cover rental fees.

Carlene Wagner, coordinator of the program says the program is strictly for those struggling with Dementia.

“It gives them the opportunity to kind of experience success and express themselves and often they don’t get that in their everyday life anymore,” explains Wagner.  “It’s trying to just give them back that independence and feelings of purpose.”

The program will begin in September and will give those in attendance a chance to build relationships with coaches and other students.

“The program is a 10-12 week intergenerational art based program and it strives to give that person that’s living with dementia that opportunity still for self-expression and creative arts.”

The recreational and culture grant program is geared at enhancing the quality of life for residents and is now in its sixth year.
