Mike Yargeau, Mayor of Penhold. (Mike Yargeau)The Town of Penhold has formed a new committee focused on community safety, with its first meeting set for tonight at the Municipal Board Room.

A few members of council will sit on the committee, along with four residents.

Mayor Mike Yargeau says their early work will be figuring out what the town's needs are, as safety includes a broad range of issues.

“Do we need a Citizens on Patrol group started up? Do we need more awareness programs, courses we could run through the town on Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design to let people know things they could do to keep their properties safer,” Yargeau says.

“(Also), we’ve got two fairly busy highways coming through town so speed’s a big factor, do we need some awareness programs to make sure people know they need to slow down when they’re coming through our town.”

The committee will conduct a “community diagnostic” and develop a plan that will be presented to council in October.

Yargeau says the duration of the committee and how frequently it meets, will be determined by the members.
